My mom and I love to make custom slipcovers. Sewing has been a passion of ours for many, many years and slipcovers are one of our favorite things to sew.
We recently helped a client select fabric for a custom slipcover for a vintage glider. She mentioned that she was going to use the slipcovered chair in a nursery for her new baby boy and wanted to do blue and white. We suggested that she use a white fabric and a blue piping to add contrast.
She ordered a cotton duck from our selection of Carole Fabrics in a pure white and a deep royal blue. When the fabric arrived my mom and I pre-washed it to make the slipcover would not shrink. The blue fabric was washed twice in hot water to insure that the blue wouldn’t run into the white slipcover and ruin it the first time is was washed. (even though the fabric was pre-washed we still recommend washing all slipcovers in cool water and placing them back on the furniture when they are still slightly damp)
This morning I was delighted to find an email from this client full of beautiful photos and kind words of gratitude. She was thrilled with the way the chair turned out and wanted to share pictures of her nursery with my mom and I.
Isn’t this the cutest nursery? I just love the way she decorated it and the choice of fabric and colors for the chair look great in these surroundings.
Alchemy fine living is a creative business. My mom and I offer furniture painting services, simple upholstery, and custom slipcovers.
We have been painting furniture for clients for over a decade now. The two of us have been sewing our whole lives. We've sewn things like prom dresses and bathing suits, but back in 2008 we decided to focus our seamstress abilities on home decorative items; specifically custom made slipcovers.
I'm Deana, the author of this blog. My mom, Connie, taught me from a young age how to spot a deal at a flea market or a thrift shop. She could always spot the hidden potential of an old, worn out piece of furniture. I learned to sew when I was four years old and all through the years I helped my mom with DIY projects around the house.
In 2008 she & I turned our hobby into a business. We offer furniture painting, upholstery, and sewing services.
