I’m often asked if painting laminate furniture is possible. How do I paint laminate furniture? Well, the process is pretty much exactly like painting any other type of furniture. When painting furniture of any kind proper preparation is critical. Painting is the easy part. The prep work is the hard part. Honestly, prep work sucks, […]
Most of the furniture that my mom and I paint is antique or vintage, which means it usually has years of build up on it from things like furniture wax. Often times pieces of furniture have been sitting in a garage for long periods of time collecting dust and animal hair. Other times the furniture […]
This custom made slipcover was created for a client who lives in Huntington Beach. She wanted a simple and cozy slipcover for this comfortable slipper chair that sits in her master bedroom. She stopped by the store about two weeks ago with samples of some of the fabrics in her room, including the towels from […]
I love Mondays!! Tuesday through Friday my mom and I run the shop and if we are busy we are sewing and/or upholstering while answering phone calls and helping customers, but Saturdays and Mondays we spend the day at our workshop painting furniture and working on projects. We have fun pretty much everyday of the […]
My mom and I love to paint furniture. We work really well together as a team. She handles most of the dirty work. She is usually the one scrubbing and sanding the furniture in preparation for paint. I am the one who has mastered the spray gun, so I do a majority of the painting. […]
My mom and I recently had a very sweet lady stop by the store and inquire about slipcovers. She was considering a beautiful fabric from Calico Corners that she had spotted on clearance. We chatted with her for a little while and discussed the dimensions of her furniture and the style of slipcover that she […]

My mom is a DIY kind of gal. When I was a kid I remember trips to thrift stores, strolling the hardware store isles, and of course spending hours feeling fabric at the yardage shop. She was constantly transforming bargain buys into treasures for our home. With a fresh coat of paint or a new slipcover, she gave old furniture new life. We have always enjoyed being creative together and in 2008 we turned our hobby and passion into a business.
Alchemy fine living is a creative business located in Santa Ana, Ca. We offer furniture painting services, upholstery, and custom slipcovers. We also sell vintage and antique treasures, as well as hand crafted items that we create. Our store is full of all the things we love!
I'm Deana, the author of this blog. My mom, Connie, taught me from a young age how to spot a deal at a flea market or a thrift shop. She could always spot the hidden potential of an old, worn out piece of furniture. I learned to sew when I was four years old and all through the years I helped my mom with DIY projects around the house.
In 2008 she & I turned our hobby into a business. We re-do old furniture and hand craft items for sale in our boutique. For those who, like us, love to DIY we offer lots of tips and advice in our tutorial videos. We also offer furniture painting, upholstery, and sewing services for those who don't want to tackle the project themselves.
