My mom and I had a little lull between custom paint orders and upholstery work, so we had a blast transforming her patio. We made custom throw pillows for her backyard, new cushions for her patio set, and reupholstered the seats of her outdoor dining chairs. We rarely get anything done for our own homes [...]
My mom and I love to do upholstery work. For those of you not quit ready to tackle the job yourself stop by the store or shoot over an email for a quote. We can re-upholster your ottoman, wing back chair, sofa and even create a custom upholstered headboard. We offer Carole Fabrics here in [...]
This adorable little chair is one of our most recent projects. We covered it in a fabric offered by Carole Fabrics. My mom and I helped our client select the fabric from the sample books we have here in our store. It’s a cute little checkered fabric that fits this tiny chair perfectly. For a [...]
This French Provincial chair is one of our most recent projects. We tore all of the old fabric off, painted the chair a pretty pale blue, distressed the paint a little and then added all new upholstery. We set up our video camera and recorded most of the re-upholstery process.
The following video is [...]
My mom and I always love it when we can completely transform old furniture with a fresh coat of paint or band new upholstery. We get a thrill out of making old furniture look totally different and giving it new life. So many pieces of antique and vintage furniture are built incredibly well and we [...]
At our Santa Ana store front my mom and I offer furniture for sale that her and I have either re-upholstered, painted, or otherwise refinished. We love to find old forgotten furniture and make it beautiful again. We also offer these services to our clients. One of our most recent projects was this sofa. [...]
This recliner was in pretty bad shape when it arrived at our workshop located in Santa Ana, California. It was in desperate need of new upholstery. My mom and I love to do this kind of work. Sewing home decorative items and redoing furniture with new upholstery is something that women in [...]
This chair had a sticker on the back leg that said, “property of the Marriott”. It definitely looked like a old, outdated chair straight out of a tacky hotel when it arrived at our shop. We painted it a very high gloss black. The color is from Sherwin Williams. It is called Tricorn Black. Then [...]
This chair and rocker are a matching set. The two are one of our most recent upholstery projects. The chairs are over 100 years old and have been in our clients family for years, so she wanted to restore the luster of the wood and update the fabric and [...]
This super cute little chair came out of a local Starbucks. Our client used to work there and he scored this freebie when the Starbucks decided to remodel. As you can imagine it was worn out, but not anymore! The chair has brand new upholstery in a bright, fun fabric. Our client chose this great [...]

My mom is a DIY kind of gal. When I was a kid I remember trips to thrift stores, strolling the hardware store isles, and of course spending hours feeling fabric at the yardage shop. She was constantly transforming bargain buys into treasures for our home. With a fresh coat of paint or a new slipcover, she gave old furniture new life. We have always enjoyed being creative together and in 2008 we turned our hobby and passion into a business.
Alchemy fine living is a creative business located in Santa Ana, Ca. We offer furniture painting services, upholstery, and custom slipcovers. We also sell vintage and antique treasures, as well as hand crafted items that we create. Our store is full of all the things we love!
I'm Deana, the author of this blog. My mom, Connie, taught me from a young age how to spot a deal at a flea market or a thrift shop. She could always spot the hidden potential of an old, worn out piece of furniture. I learned to sew when I was four years old and all through the years I helped my mom with DIY projects around the house.
In 2008 she & I turned our hobby into a business. We re-do old furniture and hand craft items for sale in our boutique. For those who, like us, love to DIY we offer lots of tips and advice in our tutorial videos. We also offer furniture painting, upholstery, and sewing services for those who don't want to tackle the project themselves.
