So, I have never tried milk paint. I don’t know why. I guess maybe I have just got too comfortable using my acrylic/latex paints. I’ve learned to use basic interior paint in ways that makes it look chippy, aged, worn and distressed. But… lately I have been drooling over some gorgeous furniture on Pinterest. In [...]
This coffee table is one of my most recent finds at the local thrift store. I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it. It has such cute, curvy lines. When I saw the $20 price tag I loved it even more!!! I immediately imagined it painted a bright and cheerful green [...]
Painting wicker requires a few different steps than painting wood or previously painted surfaces, but most of the work is the same. When painting furniture I normally wash down finished surfaces with TSP and then sand them thoroughly before priming and painting. I’ve talked all about the exact steps and necessary products and tools required [...]
I love to paint furniture and at nine months pregnant I’m taking it easy, but I’m still painting on occasion. I have discussed this with two different doctors and with their approval I have continued to paint furniture throughout my pregnancy. I do take safety very seriously. I always wear a full jump suit, hood [...]
My husband and I are expecting our first baby at the end of September. We have been having so much fun getting things ready for her, well I know I have, he is getting pretty sick of the word cute by now I’m sure. My mom, on the other hand, loves the word cute. Her [...]
About three months ago my husband and I moved into the loft directly above my store. I love the commute to work! I also love the fact that when I am decorating a room I can just run down the stairs and nab an item from my boutique. As you can imagine, my home is [...]
My husband and I are having a party this evening and until this morning we did not have a coffee table. I got up early and headed to the Salvation Army before work. Much to my surprise I found exactly what I was looking for and it was only $25!!!! I loaded it up in [...]
My mom and I have been crazy busy painting furniture for customers, creating cushions, pillows, and slipcovers too. Today we decided to take a break from all that work and make a super fun project, a dog bed!! Shelby and Teddy love it! Now hopefully Shelby will sit on it and quit begging my husband [...]
My husband is the master when it comes to finding amazing deals on Craigslist. He recently scored this chesterfield sofa for us for only $300!!! It has solid hardwood construction, real leather upholstery, springs inside, and down feather cushions. I can’t even imagine what this thing cost brand new, but I’m sure it was upwards [...]
My mom and I had so much fun making this lamp shade, well actually, my mom took over and pretty much did all the work while I watched. We always manage to stay busy while we are at “work”.
We have a whole bucket of crystals that we use for chandeliers and antique lamps. I [...]

My mom is a DIY kind of gal. When I was a kid I remember trips to thrift stores, strolling the hardware store isles, and of course spending hours feeling fabric at the yardage shop. She was constantly transforming bargain buys into treasures for our home. With a fresh coat of paint or a new slipcover, she gave old furniture new life. We have always enjoyed being creative together and in 2008 we turned our hobby and passion into a business.
Alchemy fine living is a creative business located in Santa Ana, Ca. We offer furniture painting services, upholstery, and custom slipcovers. We also sell vintage and antique treasures, as well as hand crafted items that we create. Our store is full of all the things we love!
I'm Deana, the author of this blog. My mom, Connie, taught me from a young age how to spot a deal at a flea market or a thrift shop. She could always spot the hidden potential of an old, worn out piece of furniture. I learned to sew when I was four years old and all through the years I helped my mom with DIY projects around the house.
In 2008 she & I turned our hobby into a business. We re-do old furniture and hand craft items for sale in our boutique. For those who, like us, love to DIY we offer lots of tips and advice in our tutorial videos. We also offer furniture painting, upholstery, and sewing services for those who don't want to tackle the project themselves.
