This adorable little vanity chair was introduced in a post earlier this month. We finished it up last week and it turned out super cute! We painted it a soft white and then added some very subtle, hand painted accents in the curved lines. The recessed areas were painted with a pale tan […]
Vinyl isn’t a fabric that my mom and I work with frequently, but that doesn’t mean we wont. We recently had a client ask us to re-upholster three bar stools in a black vinyl. These chairs were pretty beat up when they arrived at our shop. The owner, a mother of young children, admitted that […]
This recliner was in pretty bad shape when it arrived at our workshop located in Santa Ana, California. It was in desperate need of new upholstery. My mom and I love to do this kind of work. Sewing home decorative items and redoing furniture with new upholstery is something that women in our […]
My dad salvaged these really cool antique feet from an old dresser. They are pine and covered in chipping paint, which gives them a great aged patina. He used them to create a custom ottoman that my mom and I covered in burlap. The tiny ruffle on the bottom is made from a drop cloth […]
We offer re-upholstery that is all done at our store location. Drop off any piece of furniture and we will transform it for you. We can replace springs, batting and all other materials necessary to restore the integrity of your furniture. When is re-upholstery a good option? If you have furniture that […]
This vintage wing back chair is one of our most recent upholstery projects. My dad even got in on a little piece of the action. He decided to take the chair home and started “demolition”. He removed the wood base and meticulously picked out staples one by one. He didn’t last long though. After about […]
My mom and I picked up this vintage headboard, foot board and side rails at an estate sale in Long Beach. It was in pretty rough shape when we spotted it, but that didn’t scare us. We hauled it to our workshop and got busy right away. The first thing we did was scrub all […]
This little side chair was one of our most recent re-upholstery projects for a client. The chair was in excellent condition, so we didn’t have to replace the foam. We did add a bit of cotton batting though. Our client chose a gorgeous fabric from our line of Carole fabrics. She wanted a bit of contrast, so we […]
A friend of mine gave me two super cute chairs. Oh how I love freebies!! I liked these chairs so much I decided to keep them for myself, rather than re-upholster them and sell them in the store. That’s the problem with my “job” half the time I want to keep the furniture for myself.
I love to upholster furniture! It is so fun to see something old and forgotten transform into something beautiful again. I picked up this chair at my local Salvation Army. It was ugly and uncomfortable, but not anymore! My mom and I stripped it down to bare bones and replaced everything. The body of the […]
Alchemy fine living is a creative business. My mom and I offer furniture painting services, simple upholstery, and custom slipcovers.
We have been painting furniture for clients for over a decade now. The two of us have been sewing our whole lives. We've sewn things like prom dresses and bathing suits, but back in 2008 we decided to focus our seamstress abilities on home decorative items; specifically custom made slipcovers.
I'm Deana, the author of this blog. My mom, Connie, taught me from a young age how to spot a deal at a flea market or a thrift shop. She could always spot the hidden potential of an old, worn out piece of furniture. I learned to sew when I was four years old and all through the years I helped my mom with DIY projects around the house.
In 2008 she & I turned our hobby into a business. We offer furniture painting, upholstery, and sewing services.
