My mom and I hit the jack pot with this dresser! I thought it was pretty cute when we spotted it at the thrift store, but it looked like it was going to need a lot of work. It was filthy and the poor paint job was a really awful color. We initially planned [...]
So, I have never tried milk paint. I don’t know why. I guess maybe I have just got too comfortable using my acrylic/latex paints. I’ve learned to use basic interior paint in ways that makes it look chippy, aged, worn and distressed. But… lately I have been drooling over some gorgeous furniture on Pinterest. In [...]
Recently I have had a lot of questions about the spray gun that I use to paint furniture. I use a Husky HVLP Gravity Feed Spray Gun. I wrote all about it HERE. The manufacturer states that the gun is not compatible with latex paints, and several people have brought that to my attention [...]
This mirror was painted for a client. It is one of our most recent projects. It was painted with Solo paint, which is a product by Sherwin Williams (No big surprise if you follow this blog regularly. I’m pretty much obsessed with their paints). Our client chose Pure White in a gloss finish.
Today I’m going to offer up a quick little tip for those of you who want to paint your own furniture. Most of us who paint furniture are bringing new life to old furniture. Old furniture is often purchased at Estate Sales or Thrift shops and can be really grimy. I have encountered pieces that [...]
Just a couple weeks ago my mom and I had a ton of requests for high gloss furniture. It seemed all of our clients wanted glossy white finishes on their furniture. Now this week black is the color and distressed is the look. It’s funny how things go. We just finished painting and distressing a [...]
As I have mentioned countless times before on this very blog, I love distressing furniture. It’s definitely one of my favorite things to do. When this desk was dropped off by a client to be painted and distressed I was super excited. Look at all that fabulous detail!! I knew right away that those [...]
This dresser was recently dropped off at the store by an adorable pregnant woman. The dresser belonged to her great grandmother and she plans on using it for her new baby girl. How cool is that?! I think it is so fantastic when people have furniture with that sort of history. Not only is [...]
This coffee table is one of my most recent finds at the local thrift store. I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it. It has such cute, curvy lines. When I saw the $20 price tag I loved it even more!!! I immediately imagined it painted a bright and cheerful green [...]
My mom and I paint all kinds of furniture. We use lots of different colors, finishes and techniques to create different looks, but distressing painted furniture is our favorite thing to do. I just love distressed furniture. Maybe it is because I love old furniture and old furniture is usually dinged up a bit, so [...]

My mom is a DIY kind of gal. When I was a kid I remember trips to thrift stores, strolling the hardware store isles, and of course spending hours feeling fabric at the yardage shop. She was constantly transforming bargain buys into treasures for our home. With a fresh coat of paint or a new slipcover, she gave old furniture new life. We have always enjoyed being creative together and in 2008 we turned our hobby and passion into a business.
Alchemy fine living is a creative business located in Santa Ana, Ca. We offer furniture painting services, upholstery, and custom slipcovers. We also sell vintage and antique treasures, as well as hand crafted items that we create. Our store is full of all the things we love!
I'm Deana, the author of this blog. My mom, Connie, taught me from a young age how to spot a deal at a flea market or a thrift shop. She could always spot the hidden potential of an old, worn out piece of furniture. I learned to sew when I was four years old and all through the years I helped my mom with DIY projects around the house.
In 2008 she & I turned our hobby into a business. We re-do old furniture and hand craft items for sale in our boutique. For those who, like us, love to DIY we offer lots of tips and advice in our tutorial videos. We also offer furniture painting, upholstery, and sewing services for those who don't want to tackle the project themselves.
