Red chairs
I just finished painting a set of six dining chairs for a client. She chose the most beautiful color of red and selected a tinted primer, which was perfect. Red is a very tough color. Getting good coverage can be a challenge, especially when painting over a light color. Tinted primer creates the perfect base for vibrant colors such as red or orange. It can be tinted in any color of the rainbow. When painting black a dark grey tinted primer is best. In this case the primer was a deep hot pink.

Below are pictures of the finished chairs. I just love the way they turned out! Pretty, shinny and RED!!

The way you painted these chairs is brilliant. Your articles are so well written too, your work is very inspiring. When painting chairs, would you recommend always using a primer or just apply the paint after the wood has been sanded? Thankyou
Does your primer keep the top coat from scratching off? I have primed pieces with Zinsser 123 primer and still have problems with the main color getting scratched and showing the primer underneath. Any suggestions?
Thank you
If I am going for a worn out or distressed look I will skip priming, so it’s not always necessary.
The primer should help with that. I don’t typically have that problem. Not sure what you are using for a top coat, but a good quality paint should be pretty durable. I recommend Dunn Edwards, Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore or other high end paints. They tend to last longer and hold up better. Also, dry time is important. It can take some paints several weeks to fully cure and become hard. Be gentle for as long as possible to avoid scratches.
I LOVE THESE CHAIRS!!!! Red is my signature color and I use it liberally. My guest room has a headboard, shutters at the window and desk chair all in my signature Awning Red from Home Depot. You can never have too much red! Great tip about the primer. Nevr thought of that.
