The on going master bedroom project

In my on going master bedroom series I started with the original post titled The Master Bedroom is my Current Project.” In this post I discussed all of the design ideas I had for my master bedroom and set out to tackle each one of them.  I needed some additional lighting and as shown in a more recent post titled, Progress in the Master Bedroom,” I found a great chandelier that made a nice addition. I lucked out and was given one for free from a friend of my grandmother. I put a coat of paint on it, made a cord cozy and hung it directly above the bed.

My other desires for the room are an interesting treatment for the one naked wall and a cozy rug for the bare hardwood floor. I am still in search of the perfect rug, but I have started on painting the wall.  I decided to do a fleur de lis pattern in an antique black color. It almost looks like a rich, deep brown with a hint of grey. I am a huge fan of Valspar paint so of course I found this one at Lowes.  The name of this color is India Ink, which describes it much better than I just did.

I found a really gorgeous fabric with the perfect pattern on it. I created my own stencil by tracing the pattern onto a stiff sheet of plastic and then cutting it out using a razor blade and a tiny pair of scissors. I have started to apply the pattern to the wall and discovered that it is going to take me far longer than anticipated. I have already spent several hours on this project and as you can see from the pictures below I have a long way to go.

If you look real closely at the image above you may notice there is something missing. In the top right corner of the artwork there should be a curvy flower looking design. I noticed it was missing after I had put of few of them on the wall and stepped back to admire the job I was doing. I had to make a few adjustments to my stencil and then it was back to work.

You too can make your own stencil and create a custom look for your home. Just follow these simple steps:

1.       Find a pattern that you like. You can make adjustments to the size at your local printing shop or by scanning it into your computer.

2.       Lay a stiff sheet of plastic on top of the pattern and trace it with a permanent marker.  You can find sheets of plastic at your local craft supply store.

3.       Use a razor blade and a pair of tiny paper scissors to cut out the design.  Scissors with a curved tip are helpful to cut out intricate patterns.

4.       Apply a spray adhesive to the back of the stencil so it will stay in place on your wall as you apply the paint.

5.       To apply paint use a brush specifically designed for stenciling. Like the one pictured below.
