Sparkly Candles

I love things that sparkle. I adore the way a piece of costume jewelry reflects light or a rhinestone glitters in the sun. I try to add a touch of glitz to every vignette I create. I think it is important when grouping items together to incorporate many different textures. Mixing textures adds interest to an arrangement and sparkle is my favorite finishing touch.

I just recently hung a candle holder in my master bathroom.  It is a metal candle holder with a floral design.  I think it is really cute, but it is a little plain on its own.  I had to glam it up a bit with some jewels.  I added two taper candles in a lime green color.  I glued rhinestones to the candles to make them shimmer. I also hung a few necklaces from the candle holder and clipped a vintage broach to it.

Tips for rhinestone covered candles:

  1. Use Austrian crystals as apposed to rhinestones, they glitter in the sun and reflect light so much better.
  2. Use glue designed for embellishing. I use Aleene’s Jewel-it.
  3. Apply a thin bead of glue the length of the candle.
  4. Working fairly quickly apply the rhinestones. Dampen your finger with a wet paper towel so you can pick up the rhinestones more easily.
  5. Once all the rhinestones are on the candle run your finger along one edge to ensure that they are all on straight. The glue will take a while to completely set so you have time to make adjustments.

I have done this same technique on some candles in my bedroom.  I did these ones a while ago and as you can see I have actually burned them. The rhinestones just kind of peel back and melt off as the candle burns. I pick them off as that happens and save them for other projects. I think the drippy wax adds a neat affect.
